Kenora, Ontario, Canada - On the Shores of Lake of the Woods

Summer, fall and winter and spring, every season is a good time to visit Kenora, Ontario. This major tourist haven located on the shores of beautiful Lake of the Woods is only two hours by car from Winnipeg and a day's drive from Minneapolis.

Busiest in the summer, the attraction of the lake and the things to do and see balloons the population to an estimated 50,000 people. However, the vastness of the region provides seclusion for those that desire it.

Once named Rat Portage, this 125-year-old community has a robust history documented in the award winning Lake of the Woods Museum, Mather-Walls House and the Railway Museum. Things to see and activities to do abound throughout the year.
The downtown Harbourfront Park is the hub of activities such as the famous Harbourfest weekend with its Kid's Zone, Classic Boat Parade, Classic Car Show, top entertainment and just plain fun. Fishermen come from all over North America to compete for $30,000 and bragging rights in the Kenora Bass International tournament. Sailors come to compete in the LOWISA regatta. Rowers pull for honours at various regattas on Rabbit Lake. For more to see, check out the events listing.

Walking, biking, canoeing and hiking trails are all within minutes of city centre. Five beaches are less than 10 minutes from downtown and countless beaches are public on the many islands of Lake of the Woods.
Landmarks include Husky the Muskie and the Goodwill Geyser. Numerous parks provide interesting sidelines for the whole family.
The many shops in the city centre, some in century old buildings, offer a leisurely tour of the downtown and house that special purchase to bring back home. Spend some time appreciating the Heritage Murals. How many Heritage Murals can you find downtown? There are 17 with another at the Railroad Museum and Bigway Foods in Keewatin.
Places to stay include hotels and motels in all price ranges. Camping and RV parks are convenient to city amenities while secluded overnight tenting can be found throughout the area.
Restaurants are international in flavour, with Greek, Chinese, Italian, Mexican, and of course North American, while fast food outlets are well represented.
Many fishing lodges are located nearby, some offering daily or longer term accommodation and a vast range of culinary delights.
It's no wonder that Kenora's fastest growing segment is baby boomers leaving the cities to make there retirement home in Kenora. Many visitors dream of that possibility as well!

Come fall, the popular Lobsterfest put on by the local Rotary Club is a major attraction, with lobsters flown in from the east coast and cooked in specially designed steamers. About 600 people attend this night of good food and entertainment.

Winter attracts snow enthusiasts. Downhill and cross-country skiing is a major attraction. Snowmobiling is enjoyed on well-maintained trails throughout the area and beyond into Manitoba and Minnesota. Take a break from riding and get your kinks out in the 20-person hot tub at the Kenora Recreation Centre. Travel the ice road for some great ice fishing. Then again, more and more visitors just holiday in Kenora in the winter to relax.

The longer days in spring bring a rejuvenation of body and soul to residents and visitors alike. The water may be too cold for swimming, but it is a time to welcome back the summer residents like the Loons and other waterfowl. As nature discards its blanket of snow and the trees come to life, the rich green of new leafs are a photographer's delight.
